“I do not recommend this as the first AP-R book you read. He is extraordinary. But this one takes some work. The first half of the book is slow. “Why am I reading this?” slow. It picks up in the second half and becomes the type of novel we would expect from this author. But you have to get yourself through the first half. It is a great portrait of Cadiz during the 1811 siege. There are a lot of distinct, interesting and complex characters. The mystery angle once it gets going is engaging - and the culprit was a surprise to me which I found refreshing. I definitely recommend finishing this - it will not be easy! but it is worth it.”

“I think this book was ok. As some have stated before terrible mystery, but great historical fiction. Really I feel this book would have been better as a series than one book to allow the author to flush out the story and characters. Especially the mystery part.”
