“I read this 3 days ago directly after another story by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. It's been sitting with me since then.
It's such a sad story. Through no fault of her own an educated young girl whose father dies ends up a servant. In those days girls in her situation had zero recourse and would largely be regarded as nothing more than a burden without a benefactor.
It's a real indictment of the times. This story speaks to depression, classism and a whole lot of other uncomfortable truths.
If you read this as simply a "ghost story" and consider it "boring" then you have entirely missed the point.
