The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida

By Shehan Karunatilaka
The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Karunatilaka’s novel breaks with conventional modes of storytelling to reveal humanness in a strange, sprawling, tragic situation... Like Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children, Grass’s Tin Drum and Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, Karunatilaka’s book is supremely confident in its literary heterodoxy, and likewise in offering idiosyncratic particularities of ordinary Sri Lankan life well beyond the serious matters of politics, history, religion and mythology... Readers everywhere will find in such demanding specificity what we all seek from great books: the exciting if overwhelming fullness of an otherwise unknown world told on its own terms, and that frisson of unexpected identification and understanding that comes from working to stay in it.

Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“This is the most wonderful book I have read in a really long time. Beautiful writing, witty philosophical bytes, dry humour and a complex protagonist. And all this is set against the backdrop of the Srilankan Civil War. It's exceedingly dark, extremely graphic and immensely brave. It tackles Sri Lankas bloody past, takes no sides and spares no one. The protagonist is not very likable but neither are his surroundings and people around him. What if the dead of a war torn country can't rest? What If some of them still roam the places they were killed in. What if some want revenge? Some want answers? This book also dwelves into that through Almeidas ghost. Highly recommended. Although a basic knowledge of the Srilankan Civil War is a must.”
