“While only in book three of the Kent Family Chronicles, I think this one is going to be hard to beat. I will admit, the energy of the story seemed to falter with the focus shifting from Philip Kent (the protagonist of the first two novels) to Abraham Kent. Abraham, not meant to be a strong figure in any case, has lots of issues. He’s plagued by the expectations of his aging father who has gotten severely less interesting and unfamiliar to a reader of the first two novels. He also falls madly in love with his step-sister, who is strong in looks but weak in spirit. With that being said, it seems like Jakes (the author) realized that his readers would feel this way and pulled focus yet again to Abraham Kent’s son, Jared. With Jared becoming the lead protagonist and supported by more of the likable characters in the novel, such as his cousin Amanda and his Uncle Gilbert, Jakes returns to form. Jared is my favorite of the Kents so far. He feels more realistic to me in his internal dialogue. Jared feels entirely real in his moments of introspection. He is perhaps the most emotionally aware of the Kents. With it being clear that Jared will be the focus of the next novel, I am excited to pick it up after my obligatory departure from their story for a book or two. In this novel, Jakes also sets up a potential dual protagonist situation with the character of Amanda. I am excited to see if this pans out. Like Jared, Amanda seems to have more spirit in her. Additionally, this is Jakes’ first foray into shifting to a female perspective for more than just one chapter at a time. Like usual, Jakes does a fabulous job of bringing history to life with characters that feel very authentic to their time and place. I also cannot help but love when Jakes’ characters meet actual historical figures and we are confronted with some of the more human flaws of these figures that history books ignore in an effort to perpetuate a national mythology. If you’re a lover of historical fiction… hop into the Kent Family Chronicles OR maybe just pick up this book, you won’t be disappointed.”
