The Second Horse Story MEGAPACK®
ByPublisher Description
This volume collects four great novels about horses.
First up is Thomas C. Hinkle’s Tomahawk: Fighting Horse of the Old West. Tomahawk, a wild horse, faces various challenges and adventures. Hinkle, an American novelist born in 1876, was known for his juvenile and western fiction, often focusing on stories about horses and dogs. His works typically portrayed the bond between humans and animals, set against the backdrop of the American frontier.
Next is They Also Serve, a World War I story told from the point of view of soldiers’ horses, by Peter B. Kyne. Kyne worked on his father's ranch before attending business school. Kyne served in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War and World War I, experiences that influenced his writing. (Those were the days when cavalry meant horseback riding, and horseback charges on enemy troops still took place.)
Green Timber Thoroughbreds, by Theodore Goodridge Roberts, is a Canadian tales of mystery, horses, and adventure. Roberts (1877–1953) was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, so he knew his Canadian setting well. He was the younger brother of poet Charles G.D. Roberts and the father of painter Goodridge Roberts. He published his first poem at age eleven and his first prose piece at thirteen. He briefly attended the University of New Brunswick but left before graduating.
Finally, Wild Horse Mesa, by Zane Grey, follows Chane Weymer, a wild-horse hunter, as he attempts to capture the legendary wild stallion, Panquitch, in the rugged plains of Utah. The narrative delves into themes of adventure, the untamed West, and a developing romance.
All together, these four novels offer some very different horse stories, but all are filled with action, adventure, and humor. Start with any of them—you won’t be disappointed!
