The Seagull by Anton Chekhov - Unabridged

By Anton Chekhov & Kevin Theis
The Seagull by Anton Chekhov - Unabridged by Anton Chekhov & Kevin Theis digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

"The Seagull" is Anton Chekhov's first and, arguably, most beloved play. First produced in 1896, it was a notorious failure and caused Chekhov to consider abandoning his nascent playwriting career. But a successful remounting of the play by the Moscow Art Theatre under the direction of Konstantin Stanislavsky instead prompted Chekhov to attempt additional, even more experimental plays.

The story surrounds the love lives of the four main characters: semi-successful novelist Boris Trigorin; his lover, Irina Arkadina, a fading actress; Arkadina's son, the budding author Konstantin Treplev, and the young ingenue Nina Zarachnaya, who is torn between Trigorin and Treplev.

An ensemble piece, the play is peppered with fascinating and fully-realized secondary characters as well and has been hailed as one of the first "modern" plays, where the dialogue, characters, situations and resolutions are firmly based in realism.

"The Seagull" is one of the most performed and admired plays in history and is presented here in its original and unabridged format.

About Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was a Russian playwright and short story writer whose modernistic approach to both mediums has made him one of the most revered authors of all time. After surviving a poor and abusive childhood, Chekhov was forced to find his own way in the world and take care of his family. He began writing short, humorous stories to supplement his income and soon became a widely praised and popular short story writer. Shortly before he began writing plays, Chekhov learned he had tuberculosis, which would ultimately claim his life, but not before he produced four of the greatest works of the Russian theatre: The Seagull (1895), Uncle Vanya (1897), The Three Sisters (1900) and The Cherry Orchard (1903). Chekhov's modernistic approach to theatre - in which he explored a new concept that became known as "realism" - attracted the attention of the great actor and director Konstantin Stanislavsky who proceeded to produce his works at the renowned Moscow Art Theatre and cemented Chekhov as the premiere dramatist of his day. Chekhov ultimately succumbed to tuberculosis in 1904 but his literary reputation lives on. His plays have been translated into dozens of languages and have been performed around the world for over a century. Anton Chekhov is regularly cited by literary critics as not only one of the finest writers in Russia, but among the most revered and celebrated authors of all time.
