“A mesmerizing blend of danger, spellbinding magic, and lush world-building . . . plunges readers into a world of deadly trials and ravenous demons.”—Isabel Ibañez, #1 New York Times bestselling author of What the River Knows

Nine years ago, the war between the Kingdom of Night and the Kingdom of Rivers tore Àn’yīng’s family apart, leaving her mother barely alive, and a baby sister to fend for. Now the mortal realm is falling into eternal night, and mó—beautiful, ravenous demons—roam, feasting on the souls of humans.

Àn’yīng’s only hope now is the Immortality Trials. If she can complete every Trial in the magical competition, she has the chance to save her mother’s life. But the Trials are deadly, and the longer Àn’yīng survives, the clearer it is that certain contestants are out for her blood. Even odder, though, is the handsome rival who seems intent on protecting her life. Survival is key, but Àn’yīng will need to figure out if she can trust the stranger she’s falling for, or if he’s the most dangerous player of all.

The Scorpion and the Night Blossom Reviews

3.5
“This just felt like a repeat and amalgamation of so many other books I've read. I also got annoyed with all the back and forth between the characters. I don't really want to continue the series, but I might just so I can see if it gets any better and wrap up the storylines. Is the second book worth it? Format: audiobook”
“I have mixed feelings on this book. I found the world to be immersive and atmospheric. I enjoyed the high stakes trials the bit of mystery that was woven in helped to keep me invested and engaged. The chemistry between the MMCs was apparent and I liked the conflict and tension between these two that starts from the moment they meet. My heart hurts for Yu Chen by the end of this book. However, I do wish there was more nuance and lore within the world building it feels very surface level, but I also understand that this is YA. The Immortal Trials are such an important part of this book but overall, the trials themselves were lackluster, and she ended needing saving or help from a man more often than not. I enjoyed the book overall and feel invested enough to continue to the second book in the duology. Format: audio + physical Audiobook review: 5/5 Narration style: single narration”
