“Intriguing but difficult. This books does a lot - it’s a spy thriller on one hand, a modern (at the time of writing) story with a historical overlay and also something that dwells on the ends justifying the means and the rights of any of us to “play God”. It does all of this, generally, fairy successfully. Probably my favourite part of the whole work is the main character’s emotional depth: his wilful delusion about why he starts out, his confusion as he interacts with some of the other characters. This all felt real. The plotting, as best I understood it (see below) was also quite impressive. The main shortcoming for me is that this is a dense, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it book: the author presumes a LOT from the reader and, to be frank, I spent too long flicking back through to catch things I half recalled or separately googling stuff. I don’t need reams of patient explanation but this is a book that’s too subtle by half. A little more dot-joining and my mind would have been freer to think engage with the subtext and the ideas. And, I dare say, I would have enjoyed it a bit more.”
