Publisher Description

"The Scarlet Pimpernel," Baroness Orczy's thrilling adventure novel set during the post-revolution Reign of Terror in France, began life as a play, which ran on the West End for over 2,000 performances. The success of the stage version prompted the Baroness to publish the story as a novel and it became an immediate international best-seller.

The story surrounds a great mystery that has all of London buzzing: What is the identity of the masked adventurer known as the "Scarlet Pimpernel" who travels back and forth from London to Paris, rescuing members of the French aristocracy before they can fall victim to "Madame Guillotine"? It couldn't possibly be the seemingly foppish and retiring Sir Percy Blakeney...or could it?

One of the most popular adventure novels of all time, "The Scarlet Pimpernel" is presented here in its original and unabridged format.

About Baroness Orczy

Baroness Orczy (1865-1947) was a Hungarian-born British author of adventure fiction, best known for her play and novel "The Scarlet Pimpernel." Born into the aristocracy of Hungary, Baroness Orczy married a poor illustrator and they would work as translators to supplement their modest earnings. Embarking on a writing career, the Baroness struggled at first until she struck upon the idea of writing a play with her husband about an English aristocrat who leads a double life as an international adventurer who travels from Britain to France to rescue French noblemen threatened with death following the French Revolution. The play was a huge success, prompting Baroness Orczy into publishing the story as a novel, which was so popular that it finally brought the couple financial security and inspired the Baroness to pen a half-dozen sequels. Politically active and deeply involved in the war effort during the Second World War, Orczy continued to write plays and novels for the rest of her life, but none of them achieved the same success and notoriety as the first book of the Scarlet Pimpernel series.
