The Scarlet Letter - Unabridged by Nathaniel Hawthorne & Kevin Theis digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

"The Scarlet Letter" is Nathaniel Hawthorne's best-known novel and is considered by many to be among the masterpieces of American literature.

Set in 17th-century Puritan Boston, the book centers on Hester Prynne, a young woman who bears an illegitimate child and is subsequently condemned by her community to wear a scarlet letter "A" on her chest as a symbol of her adultery. Hester's secret lover, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, is tormented by guilt but cannot bring himself to confess his role in the affair. Meanwhile, Hester's estranged husband, Roger Chillingworth, arrives in Boston and disguises himself as a physician to seek revenge on Dimmesdale.

The novel concludes as a profound meditation on sin, forgiveness, and the complexities of moral judgment in a rigidly religious society.

"The Scarlet Letter" is presented here in its original and unabridged format.

About Nathaniel Hawthorne

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an American novelist and short story writer whose works explore themes of sin, guilt, and moral complexity within the context of Puritan New England. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Hawthorne was deeply influenced by his ancestral history, particularly the involvement of one of his ancestors in the Salem witch trials. This legacy of moral conflict and inherited guilt became a recurring motif in his writing. After graduating from Bowdoin College in 1825, where he befriended future luminaries such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and future President Franklin Pierce, Hawthorne devoted himself to writing. His early works, including Twice-Told Tales (1837), established his reputation for psychological depth and symbolic storytelling. Hawthorne's most celebrated novel, The Scarlet Letter (1850), delves into the consequences of sin and societal judgment, cementing his place as a central figure in American literature.Other notable works include The House of the Seven Gables (1851), The Blithedale Romance (1852), and The Marble Faun (1860). Hawthorne's writing is characterized by rich symbolism, dark romanticism, and a profound exploration of human nature's moral ambiguities. In addition to his literary career, Hawthorne held several political appointments, including U.S. consul in Liverpool, a position secured through his friendship with President Pierce. He spent several years in Europe before returning to the United States, where his health declined. Hawthorne died in 1864 in Plymouth, New Hampshire, leaving behind a legacy of introspective and morally complex fiction that continues to influence American literature.
