The Scarlet Gospels Reviews

3.5
“Such a curious book. In places Clive Barker conjured real dread and a sense of tension and fear such as I haven't read in a long time. But then parts also landed with a dull thud or were too simplistic. Maybe I need to go back and read some of the older material.”
“Hellraiser meets Dante's Inferno in a quite enjoyable horror-adventure story. Although I was ready for the usual suspects (gore, body horror, disturbing imaginary, sexual torture), I did not expect the epic tale of a group of ragtag individuals with a sixth sense for the supernatural descending into Hell to save a friend. That was a surprise—and quite a welcomed one. If you're into the Hellraiser saga, there's a high chance you like this book as it expands on the Cenobites' lore, such as their organization, their motivations, and their social standing among the peoples of Hell. The narrator changes points of view often, so you get to read what goes through Pinhead's mind at all times. However, my favorite part is the exploration of Hell itself: ample descriptions of landscapes, demons, rituals, and social hierarchies, all of it with a scoop of forgotten history scattered all over the place in the form of ruinous buildings. Just to keep it spoiler-free, I'll just say this: the Lucifer plotline is the best in the whole book. That said, I wouldn't say this story is perfect. I have issues with the dialogue (full of one-liners, superfluous at times) and with the pacing (either too fast or slowed down by unnecessary scenes). It begins as a noir horror and then changes genres halfway through, which makes the overall tone clash. There's also not much in the way character development (except, again, for the Lucifer plotline), but at least the whole cast is somewhat endearing. If you're looking for a fun horror story, full of dantesque elements, rich descriptions, and a touch of disturbing imagery, this is for you. It will probably not be the book of the year, but you'll have a good time.”
