“I’m a huge fan of Frank Bill but this one just didn’t hit the mark for me. It feels like a massive departure from his more character driven works with his masterful staccato like writing. The world is most definitely classic Frank Bill but the narrative approach was too wordy in all honesty. Bill is at his best when he is in pure minimalist mode. His classic morally ambiguous and memorable characters are all here (including a few from the Donnybrook world) but we almost are given too much background, too much dialogue, too much words. The novel becomes a jumble of ideas and it’s hard to find the clarity that I love so much from Bill’s other works.
I did like the concept. This near distant dystopia that feels more and more like a real possibility is beautifully described. Frank Bill captures rural noir unlike anybody else! But this felt like an ambitious concept that needed another few rounds of editing to truly make the impact his other works did on me.
I do hope to see Van Dorn appear in future books. Even Cotto is a memorable villain who has potential to become a classic Frank Bill character in another story.”
