The Saint-Fiacre Affair (Inspector Maigret)

By Georges Simenon & Shaun Whiteside
The Saint-Fiacre Affair (Inspector Maigret) by Georges Simenon & Shaun Whiteside digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

An evocative tale from Georges Simenon that unearths the inspector’s past: Maigret finds an anonymous note predicting a crime in his hometown.

I wish to inform you that a crime will be committed at the church of Saint-Fiacre during first mass on All Souls’ Day.

This handwritten note is deposited at the headquarters of the Police Judiciaire in Paris. Maigret sets off for the village, having been there last for his father’s funeral.

As bleary-eyed people depart the All Souls’ service, Maigret thinks the note must be wrong—until the motionless Countess of Saint-Fiacre, upon closer look, is found dead in her pew. Who is responsible for the crime? Could it be the countess’s young secretary and alleged lover, the tight-lipped priest, the profligate Count of Saint-Fiacre, or the new estate manager? Though inundated with troubling memories from his past, Maigret remains steadfast in his hunt for the truth behind this sinister turn of events.

The Saint-Fiacre Affair (Inspector Maigret) Reviews

2.5
“Is it just me or does Simenon’s dialogue read like a poorly dubbed Jackie Chan movie? Never mind the egregious use of ellipses— itself justification for public flogging—but the pauses? The nonsequitars? The bizarre exclamations! It’s like the man never heard a real conversation in his life. I guess when you’re one of France’s most prolific authors, you don’t have much time to care. What a shame really since the plot was passably interesting, if a little rushed. Simenon’ famous detective Margaret investigates the murder of a spendthrift Countess, the Saint-firac, collapsed dead in the parish church. Sure, action is scant and compared to his fellow Frenchman, Poirot, Maigret feels pedestrian, but it was quick and uncanny and Simenon is always so economical. Worth a crack for any fan of the 3rd Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man. I liked neither, so at the very least, I am consistent, if nothing else. First book of 2026 down. 25 more to go. Happy reading!”
“Maybe. It was on a boring side. Inspector Maigret is the main character and it’s the first book in the series o ever read so can’t judge the series. However in this book all he does is sit back and let someone else solve the mystery. I found it difficult to track all the characters as well. But it isn’t hopeless completely. There is a mystery that gets solved so you may want to find out.”

About Georges Simenon

Georges Simenon (1903–1989) was born in Liège, Belgium. An intrepid traveler with a profound interest in people, Simenon strove on and off the page to understand—and not to judge—the human condition in all its shades. He is among the most widely read writers in the global canon.
