“I literally ate this book up. I loved Northern lights when I was younger which made me very excited to read this author’s work once more, and I was not disappointed ! The XIXth century London ambience was absolutely perfect, there was a great variety of characters and both the plot and the writing completely gripped me. I couldn’t stop reading.”
“Total juvenilia that has no depth, completely dissimilar to the golden compass in this respect. I had thought that it would be as deep and enjoyable for an adult as it would be for a child, but I can only imagine very young children reading this book at all.
The plot is obvious. The mystery does not grip. There is no depth to the characters within the first chapters (again, unlike the his dark materials trilogy.) I won’t bother finishing it, which is bothersome, because I looked forward to another book by Pullman…. Alas, this is the end between him and I”
