Publisher Description

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK
A USA TODAY BESTSELLER

#1 New York Times bestselling author Wally Lamb, celebrated for two prior Oprah Book Club selections, returns with an exceptional third pick, a propulsive novel following a young father grappling with unbearable tragedy as he searches for hope, redemption, and the possibility of forgiveness.

Corby Ledbetter is struggling. New fatherhood, the loss of his job, and a growing secret addiction have thrown his marriage to his beloved Emily into a tailspin. And that’s before he causes the tragedy that tears the family apart. Sentenced to prison, Corby struggles to survive life on the inside, where he bears witness to frightful acts of brutality but also experiences small acts of kindness and elemental kinship with a prison librarian who sees his light and some of his fellow offenders, including a tender-hearted cellmate and a troubled teen desperate for a role model. Buoyed by them and by his mother’s enduring faith in him, Corby begins to transcend the boundaries of his confinement, sustained by his hope that mercy and reconciliation might still be possible. Can his crimes ever be forgiven by those he loves?

The River Is Waiting (Oprah's Book Club) Reviews

4.5
“Life is random. Death is random. Some things can be forgiven. Some can't.”
“I have so many mixed feelings on this book I don’t even know where to start, I’m not even sure if I liked it or hated it. I strongly disliked the MMC from the very begging, even before the tragedy strikes. He does have redeeming qualities later on, especially when it comes to Solomon. And no matter how much I disliked him, he didn’t deserve the torment he received toward the end. And when he gets refused release, that was a gut punch even for me! I was finally starting to root for him! I think I honestly would’ve liked this book more through Emily’s point of view 😂 I didn’t like how Corby truly felt like they just needed to move on together after his release. He was pushy and only thinking of himself. Not Emily or Maisie in my opinion. And Emily’s “realization” at the end when she’s looking at the library mural, that she “should’ve seen the signs” Emily was a victim of his abuse and deceit. She was the sole parent working, and then came home to twin toddlers. But she should’ve seen the signs that her husband was struggling and should’ve pushed him to seek help. I’m sorry, that sounds a lot like victim shaming to me! The more I think about it, the madder I get and I want to give it a lower rating 😂”
