The Return
ByPublisher Description
“Bentley Little is a master of horror on par with Koontz and King....The Return is so powerful that readers will keep the lights on day and night.”—Midwest Book Review
Springerville is famous for the legend of the Mogollon Monster. Of course nobody really believes it. It’s just a good campfire story, something to attract gullible tourists—until an excavation team unearths the figurine of a screaming woman, the jawbone of a deformed animal, and a child’s toy. How odd that they were buried together. Odd, too, is the foul odor lingering in the air, the strange noises at night, and the man’s face found hanging from a tree. Now the locals are locking their doors. Because after sundown, campfire stories can seem very, very real.

“Bentley Little is an author I've heard both a lot of praise for and some very mixed reviews. He's a popular horror author, well known for being arguably one of the most unique when it comes to the genre. But his unique style and sense of humor aren't for everyone and even fans of his work can find some of his stories to be a little much at times from what I hear. I decided to finally dive into this author's work with 'The Return', which to me before reading this book sounded like Little's personal take on the camp-fire boogeyman story. But what I didn't realize is that it would end up being something so much more complex than that.
Springerville is famous for its local legends surrounding 'The Mogollon Monster', but aside from that it's known for being a relatively quiet town with only one killer in its long history. But when an old settlement belonging to an old native American tribe is found, it isn't long before the locals and the people in their surrounding area start to notice some very strange things occurring. Museums are being tarnished not by vandals, but by the exhibits themselves, a boogeyman from the dawn of time is on the loose, people are vanishing left right, and center, but worst of all whole towns are turning against one another in a fit of sudden bloodlust. It's up to Glen and his friends to find out what's going on and put a stop to it. But with his destiny already being predetermined, can he succeed in his battle against an ancient evil, or he is doomed to lose?
Bentley Little has written a very engaging horror novel that is both incredibly strange and scary. It's a nicely paced-out story with a solid sense of humor and atmosphere, even though it does crumble a little towards the end. It's both got some terrifyingly unsettling imagery and some very bizarre and outlandish ones as well. It's a novel that keeps you on your toes with its sense of humor and the sheer horrifying reality of the situation unfolding.
I will say if you're expecting this to be a small-town horror story with a boogeyman mixed in for good fun, then you might be disappointed. It's more of an epic tale of an evil from the dawn of time returning in the present day to destroy an entire population of people, just like it did to an old native American tribe that vanished hundreds of years ago. If you like those types of stories then you should definitely give this a try, if you don't however give it a pass.
I will say despite how much I enjoyed this novel, I did find the characters a little lacking, they were enjoyable enough with some interesting character traits. But ultimately they didn't ever come across to me as fully realized or fleshed-out breathing individuals with a life of their own outside of the story. They're not one-dimensional per-say but they're definitely two-dimensional at the very least. I also find the introduction between our main characters Glen and Melanie to be a little contrived. As a fan of horror, instant love is unfortunately a trope that appears in nearly every story that's been written for this genre, but here it unfolds in a way that isn't even remotely interesting or enticing. I did root for these two love birds throughout the novel as they went on their journey and they did come across as compelling enough characters once they had been properly established, but there was no proper setup for their romance and it honestly just kind of happened. I feel the reason for this is simply because Bentley Little was more interested in the actual story and honestly seeing how the ending turned out, I wouldn't be surprised if he was either on a tight deadline or forced to only write a certain amount of pages.
Overall: A very fun horror novel with a superb sense of humor and some truly unsettling scenes. Even though this is my first novel from this author, I wouldn't recommend anyone else to pick it up as their first too. Don't get me wrong it's a really good story but I have a feeling there are much better ones to be choosing from. I will say though I haven't been deterred in any way from this author. I'll be honest I'm already thinking about what I might read next from him! So if anybody has any suggestions feel free to let me know! 8/10”
