The Ravens
ByPublisher Description
From New York Times best-selling authors Kass Morgan and Danielle Paige comes a thrilling, dark contemporary fantasy about a prestigious sorority of witches and two girls caught up in its world of sinister magic and betrayals.
At first glance, the sisters of ultra-exclusive Kappa Rho Nu—the Ravens—seem like typical sorority girls. Ambitious, beautiful, and smart, they’re the most powerful girls on Westerly College’s Savannah, Georgia, campus.
But the Ravens aren’t just regular sorority girls. They’re witches.
Scarlett Winter has always known she’s a witch—and she’s determined to be the sorority’s president, just like her mother and sister before her. But if a painful secret from her past ever comes to light, she could lose absolutely everything . . .
Vivi Devereaux has no idea she’s a witch and she’s never lived in one place long enough to make a friend. So when she gets a coveted bid to pledge the Ravens, she vows to do whatever it takes to be part of the magical sisterhood. The only thing standing in her way is Scarlett, who doesn’t think Vivi is Ravens material.
But when a dark power rises on campus, the girls will have to put their rivalry aside to save their fellow sisters. Someone has discovered the Ravens’ secret. And that someone will do anything to see these witches burn . . .

“This book was fine. It was a fun read, nice palette cleanser you don’t have to think too much about.
The Ravens follows two witches: Scarlett, a powerful witch who is next in line for Kappa president, and Vivi, a new girl who is joining the Kappa’s and learning about her brand new witch heritage at the same time. Scarlett is harbouring a few dark secrets that keep haunting her, while Vivi is so ready for a fresh start (for once!).
I didn’t care too much for the romance, felt there was no chemistry and truly didn’t care what happened between them. They met like 4 times and are just desperate to be together, it was a bit silly. It also didn’t make me feel like the initial rivalry between Vivi and Scarlett was earned, and felt more like something put in there to make Scarlett disliking Vivi more believable.
The magic system was a soft magic system, which isn’t really my favourite because it feels like they can do whatever they want convenient to the plot. Near the end of the novel, they track Tiffany using a very old spell that contacts their shadow that conveniently no one thought of until right now because the spell is Very Old. Because the limits of their power isn’t really defined beforehand, though, this also didn’t feel earned. Maybe that’s just me and my gripe with soft magic systems though.
The main villain was super predictable straight from the start, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing because at least there’s evidence throughout the book, but I marked that at like 10% through, so felt like I was just reading waiting for the reveal which I knew was coming.
HATED the info dumps at the start — I nearly DNF’d at one point because of them. Info dumps about how Scarlett knows X, how Vivi knows Y, how the magic system works for little reason other than to let the reader know “hey, this is how the magic system works!” Like you’re literally about to teach these new recruits how to use magic, why is Scarlett thinking about what Cups and Pentagon witches are when they’re picking the new pledges? Idk, I think they could have written out a lot of the info dumping, especially when you’re about to be introducing a character who, like the reader, is nearly completely new to this world and the magic.
I would recommend this for people into YA, or anyone looking for a fun fantasy book that takes little effort/energy to read.
I probably won’t pick up the next book in the series because I don’t feel strongly one way or the other about this book, but maybe one day, if I need another easy palette cleanser :)”
