By Ann LeckiePublisher Description
SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2020 WORLD FANTASY AWARD
Gods meddle in the fates of men, men play with the fates of gods, and a pretender must be cast down from the throne in this masterful first fantasy novel from Ann Leckie, New York Times bestselling author and winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke Awards.
"Absolutely wonderful. . .utterly brilliant." -- The New York Times Book Review
For centuries, the kingdom of Iraden has been protected by the god known as the Raven.
He watches over his territory from atop a tower in the powerful port of Vastai. His will is enacted through the Raven's Lease, a human ruler chosen by the god himself. His magic is sustained by the blood sacrifice that every Lease must offer. And under the Raven's watch, the city flourishes.
But the Raven's tower holds a secret. Its foundations conceal a dark history that has been waiting to reveal itself. . .and to set in motion a chain of events that could destroy Iraden forever.

“Rarely do I read a fantasy work where the author takes the “fantasy rule book”, chucks it wholesale out the window, and starts from scratch. This is that book. Brilliant, gripping, original, and a bit weird (in a good way)”

“I really adored Lecke's Imperial Radch trilogy so I was excited to tuck into her fantasy! But I'm walking away from this one a little dissatisfied.
spoilery territory below:
Things I Loved:
-the gods
-the concept of words as power and the limitations that can have **this is THE coolest thing about the book. makes you really think about phrasing, double meanings, and languages as a whole (a word in one language meaning something different in another)***
-second person pov
-casual/natural LGBTQ+ representation
-seeing the world progress around a literal rock lol
Why It's Not My Favorite:
-pacing felt slow
-action amps up in the last 10 pages, quick ending, cut to black
-never got to savor revenge, it was a pot slow to boil and then the contents spill over the side and burn up, we don't get to taste the benefits of patience!”
