“The Raven Heir by Stephanie Burgis is a story about truth, trust, and the bond of family that is thicker than blood. 🐦⬛
I liked the overall theme of the story.
War causes casualties of not only the innocent people who stand in the wake of their violence, but also the land itself. The animals, the plants, the spirits—they all suffer at the hands of greed.
Three young protagonists will face many trials and tribulations on their journey to save their family, uncover the truth of their family’s secrets, and face the world they had been hidden away from.
Balanced between being heavy and impactful, and simple and optimistic, this book reminded me of how one views life as a child. Good and evil are as clear as day, and though darkness may surround you, hope is never too far.
Together, with love, we can heal what has been broken. 👑
While the plot is a bit predictable, there were some interesting twists throughout that I definitely didn’t expect, so I was pleasantly surprised by that.
However, I did find that a few of the problems the characters faced seemed to be fix a little too easily. And, more nitpicking, some of the dialogue was just forced exposition, especially in the beginning chapters.
The triplets, Rosalind, Giles, and Cordelia, are like the individual embodiments of Soldier, Poet, King by The Oh Hellos. They felt a bit cliché at first, but overtime they became more alive and likable.
I really liked the bond between them. Even when they fought, I could feel the love and affection they had for one another, and for the rest of their family.
Magic was an important part of the story, and I really enjoyed the descriptions of Cordelia’s magic. Each animal-shape she became felt different and realistic, as they should, and there was a weight to the narrative as her powers grew.
Overall, I enjoyed this tale of heart, spirit, and fierce protection.”
“It was a lite and fun book to read with my child.”
