“The Race was interesting and compelling and yet ultimately unsatisfying.
The difficult bit in writing a novel is tying everything together as a coherent whole and there is a bit of a pretentious trend at the moment for authors to think they don't need to bother.
The Race has a ton of enthralling ideas, badly structured. Just as the first chapter gets interesting, the rug is pulled out from beneath it's feet. Chapter 2 starts to get a little intriguing, once you get over the annoyance of having Chapter 1 stolen, then bleeds into a dull mess of intentional ambiguity with Chapter 3. Chapter 4 gets interesting again then cops out at the end with no real conclusion.
So it gets a couple of stars for being compelling, but I feel cheated out of what could have been a great story.”
