Publisher Description

The world is weird. If any proof was needed, the first few months of 2020 provided it. But did we need proof? Didn't we already know that you only have to scratch the surface to see the weirdness beneath? Sometimes it oozes out, suppurates, infects; sometimes it leaps out, takes root and blossoms.

We get used to it, carry on as if it wasn't there. But we have it inside us - we are weird. What you see as normal is just the mosaic of abnormality that you experienced last week, yesterday, this morning - so of course you'll experience it tomorrow. Or will you?

Zero. Now, that's a strange number. Its first recorded use was in ancient Babylon, but it didn't reach Europe till the 12th Century. A round hole of nothing, containing everything. Black hole, wormhole, sinkhole, loophole. Is it the beginning or the end? Welcome to the Rabbit Hole. Weird.

I grew up in Wales, was educated in England and have spent most of my life in France. I've been writing since the age of 10, when my first poem was sent to a competition by my English teacher. After moving to France, I ran a café-theatre till it got demolished, whereupon I scratched my head, wondering what to do next. Eventually I became a university lecturer, specialising in Second Language Acquisition, even though (apart, obviously, from French) I've spectacularly failed to learn any languages (I'm currently trying Dutch and can already say 'The turtle eats the sandwich', which is very encouraging). I spent two years in Mayotte, a tiny, unknown island in the Indian Ocean, which France bought for 1000 piastres in 1842. Magali Rousseau (my heroine) got into a lot of trouble there, but now, like me, she's back in Provence, where she jogs, paints, and catches murderers.
