The Queen
ByPublisher Description
From “one of the hottest horror authors on the planet” (Paste) and writer of the #HorrorBookTok sensation The Troop—a heart-pounding novel of terror about a young woman searching for her missing friend and uncovering a shocking truth.
On a sunny morning in June, Margaret Carpenter wakes up to find a new iPhone on her doorstep. She switches it and is greeted by a text from her best friend, Charity Atwater. The problem is, Charity’s been missing for over a month. Most people in town—even the police—think she’s dead.
Margaret and Charity have been lifelong friends. They share everything, know the most intimate details about each another…except for the destructive secret hidden from them both. A secret that will trigger a chain of events ending in tragedy, bloodshed, and death. And now Charity wants Margaret to know her story—the real story.
In a narrative that takes place over one feverish day, Margaret follows a series of increasingly disquieting breadcrumbs as she forges deeper into the mystery of her best friend—a person she never truly knew at all….

“🐝Uh I don’t even know how to explain what I just read…. The idea of the entire story taking place in a single day is what intrigued me and made me pick up the book. Unfortunately it felt like it took place in a week, with the amount of flashbacks and side plots it didn’t have the fast pace, intensity feel I was hoping for.
I loved the idea of everything happen through a phone, since I did listen to the book i absolutely hated the sound of the text tone, pikachu….PiKaChU….PIKACHU PIKACHU….SO ANNOYING. But other than the annoying text tone I love that the phone was controlling Margaret and she only was listening to the text because she wanted so badly to find out what happened to her friend. I loved all the secrets that were revealed even if they felt like they took long to get to. As for the side plots there were too many, I felt that some didn’t aid the story line and some never felt complete. These side plots did make it slow for me and at some points I really wanted to skip them.
The overall plot and idea was interesting and I enjoyed the tie in of bug especially the wasps (was slightly confused about the shift from ants to wasps though). It was creepy and disturbing which is what made me keep reading. The descriptions through the entire book help create the uneasy and disturbing feeling. I enjoyed the authors way of describing each scenario.
I loved that it took place in St.Catharines since I grew up there but I was confused by the major high end society event that happens near the end? it was described as something seen in gossip girl, ballgowns, full string quartet like what? Does that actually happen here? Am I missing out on something so extravagant? Am I that poor? lol 🤔 it felt a little out of place. My only explanation for the event was that Margaret was so out of place with these people and much lower in social status that her point of view made it more high end and sophisticated than it was. So I’m going with that! 🐝”

“I think this author is really good at describing gross stuff and can really set a horror scene, but I didn’t like this as much as “The Troop”. I think I wasn’t as invested in the characters, especially the main character. Additionally, the last portion of the book really dragged on. Some stuff I liked, some stuff I didn’t but overall not a bad listen.”
