“A beautifully written thriller, in a unique and harsh setting that cleverly interweaves threads on the natural world, our human impact and the things we will do when blinded by our own agenda.”
“I loved this story. Considering the majority of the tale surrounded a mother and daughter travelling across the Arctic in inhospitable conditions there was a surprising amount of depth and detail.
Our young protagonist Ruby is deaf and this angle of the story was really interesting how she chose to communicate through sign language but also the written word. Using her voice through technology and describing words depending on how they felt or sounded to her. It was beautiful being swept into her silent world.
The relationship between mother Yasmin and daughter was strong, full of love, but also fraught. Mainly through misunderstanding from the mother about what exactly was best for her daughter, and what her daughter thought. Yasmin was such an interesting character who made some interesting and sometimes questionable choices but with determination and love for her husband.
The whole journey was full of tension and suspense, I was on the edge of my seat wondering if they were going to make it and who was attempting to stop them... and what lengths they would go to...
The links with wildlife, inupiat life, fracking, desolation of the wilderness, silence and the weather made for a haunting tale. It will stay with me for a while.”
