“While the prose was beautiful and the setting was captivating, I didn’t find myself as drawn to this as I did with her other books! I’ve been wracking my brain to understand why, and I think it’s to do with how much time the main characters got to spend with eachother on the page. Alba and Elias are extremely compelling protagonists. She, a *possessed* woman, clever and determined and He, a *troubled* soft spoken man with a sordid past. He is a yearner and you definitely feel that, but unfortunately the two don’t actually get too much time together and so their relationship doesn’t get a chance to develop properly, which means some plot points don’t hit as hard as they should. I appreciated the metaphors around bodily autonomy and reclaiming your fate during a time when women had neither, but I was left wanting more from this one. Nevertheless, Isabel Cañas remains an auto-buy author for me and Vampires of El Norte remains my favourite.”
