Publisher Description

"Mara Rutherford’s The Poison Season took me on journey through a bloodthirsty forest, where two star-crossed lovers discover the true meaning of poison. It brims with evocative storytelling that left me enchanted!" — Emily J. Taylor, New York Times bestselling author of Hotel Magnifique

Outsiders are always given a choice: the Forest or the lake. Either way, they’re never heard from again.

Leelo has spent her entire life on Endla, coexisting with the bloodthirsty Forest and respecting the poisonous lake that protects her island from outsiders who seek to destroy it. But as much as Leelo cares for her community, she struggles to accept that her younger brother will be exiled by his next birthday, unless he gains the magic of enchanted song so vital to Endla.

When Leelo sees a young outsider on the verge of drowning in the lake, she knows exactly what she’s supposed to do. But in a moment that will change everything, Leelo betrays her family, her best friend, and Endla by making an unthinkable choice.

Discovery could lead to devastating consequences for both Leelo and the outsider, Jaren, but as they grow closer, Leelo realizes that not all danger comes from beyond the lake—and they can only survive if Leelo is willing to question the very fabric of her society, her people, and herself.

“This book was… a book? I mean, it was mediocre but not bad. The plot itself was quite predictable and started off slow. It didn’t start getting interesting until about 30% in and even after, it’s not as flashy as most books I’ve read. Still, this story was wholesome at times and was easy to get through. I will say that the writing style has its moments, but it also just explicitly tells you what the characters are feeling and I found it kind of boring. The romance kind of felt a teeny bit rushed? I get that it was a shorter book, though. I did love the setting and the world building. The ending was satisfying, it was very much a “everyone gets a happy ending” kind of book. Overall, not terrible!”
Slightly Smiling Face“This book was a fun little read! Not the best written thing in the world and And ending was far too rushed and sloppy, and that seems to be a trend with this author. I’ve also read her series Crown of Coral and pearl and I felt similarly about it. I do think it was enjoyable though!”
Thumbs Up“Different than most fantasy books. Intresting concept. I liked that the characters had depth and growth. The story made sense, in a way fantasy can lol. The island meant to protect but a forest meant for harm was a cool concept. And the magic through singing was cool and different”
“🎧: The special edition is gorgeoussss 🦊 🐺 🦢, but the story was really slow until the last 15%. I listened to the audiobook, and the narration was well done and easy to listen to. I was invested in the ending, but wish there had been a little more umph to the story throughout. Animal sacrifice was mentioned quite a bit, but not “shown” in gory detail that I can recall. One character is chronically ill. About: A magical community in the forest and a non-magical community separated by a poisonous body of water — a young love story.”
