The Place Where They Buried Your Heart
ByPublisher Description
A woman must confront the evil that has been terrorizing her street since she was a child in this gripping haunted house novel, perfect for fans of The Last House on Needless Street and Tell Me I'm Worthless.
On an otherwise ordinary street in Chicago, there is a house. An abandoned house where, once upon a time, terrible things happened. The children who live on this block are told by their parents to stay away from that house. But of course, children don't listen. Children think it's fun to be scared, to dare each other to go inside.
Jessie Campanelli did what many older sisters do and dared her little brother Paul. But unlike all the other kids who went inside that abandoned house, Paul didn't return. His two friends, Jake and Richie, said that the house ate Paul. Of course adults didn't believe that. Adults never believe what kids say. They thought someone kidnapped Paul, or otherwise hurt him. They thought Paul had disappeared in a way that was ordinary, explainable.
The disappearance of her little brother broke Jessie's family apart in ways that would never be repaired. Jessie grew up, had a child of her own, kept living on the same street where the house that ate her brother sat, crouched and waiting. And darkness seemed to spread out from that house, a darkness that was alive—alive and hungry.

“THIS WAS CINEMAAAA!! i ate this book UP. it was ALMOST perfect. i loved the horror of this. this felt like an early 2000s cartoon horror movie in all the best ways. the best parts of the book (in my opinion) were when they were inside the house or hearing stories of those that had been inside the house. however, towards the middle, when it was mainly focusing on the family dynamics and relationships of Jessie, i felt it dragged on. some elements of the ending also didn’t sit right w me. hence why it wasn’t 5 stars for me. the rest of this review will have spoilers, so beware!! 👻 i felt like we needed to meet Lyle Morris (the old “ghost” fellow) MUCH earlier in the book, not at the 80 ish percent mark. i feel like the height of the book NEEDED to be finding the heart of the house. that being said, i loved his nod to H. P. lovecraft. chefs kiss. there were a few things w the ending that didn’t sit right w me, as mentioned before. things that felt, dare i say, cheap?? i don’t know that paul just “willing his way through it” and “he just didn’t believe he was dead” were very strong plot points. i also felt the search for the heart was way too easy and didn’t have enough time and effort into it. jessie kinda just stumbled onto it because of her son. there were also things like the house just being “distracted” which allowed E. F. to find the one thing that could kill it??? idk that feels weak to me. more of a desire or curiosity for me was why we didn’t focus on the ppl who didn’t feel the effects of the house? i feel like that should’ve been the first question we asked was why some ppl are special, and how can we use that against the house? THAT being said, absolutely read this book. immediately became one of my favorites.”
