“The Passenger is an incredibly ambitious, intellectually fascinating, structurally daring book—and also compulsively unresolved, immensely frustrating, and criminally unsatisfying.
A 400-page novel in which almost nothing happened, I didn’t believe the central relationship, the apparent mystery went nowhere, and I (mostly) didn’t care about the characters. It is one of the most self-indulgent (and vaguely incestuous) books I’ve ever read.
As a piece of literature, the book fails completely. That’s said, I couldn’t put it down. McCarthy gets two stars for that reason, and that reason alone. Salud, Squire.”
About Cormac McCarthy
The novels of the American writer Cormac McCarthy have received a number of literary awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award. His works adapted to film include All the Pretty Horses, The Road, and No Country for Old Men—the latter film receiving four Academy Awards, including the award for Best Picture. He died in 2023.
