“Of this collection there will only be about 4-5 stories that will stick with me for a long time. Ken Liu has away of delivering deeply moving stories while asking important questions of the reader. The first half of this book was engaging but the last half lost me and I seriously considered DNFing. I am so glad I didn’t because the last story was so powerful. I felt like I had the wind knocked out of me and I was forced to reckon with a past that is buried deep into the dark recesses of humanity. Overall, I would only recommend a handful of the stories in this collection.”

“Ken Liu wears his sci-fi inspirations (including the very trilogy he translated to English) and historical obsessions on his sleeve - to weave a diverse web of fantasy, sci-fi and historical fiction which made me excited for each new story, as it promised an unpredictable mix across places, dimensions and worlds which I would be taken into. He also packs gut-wrenching moments which are often the best tool to make short stories memorable. Moments from wars we've scarcely heard of in the Western canon are often more harrowing. And Liu goes to multiple centuries in the same book; the effect remains just as potently saddening.”

“I don’t usually go for short story collections — some of them I enjoyed greatly, others I could’ve skipped”
