“Almost thought I would DNF this. The author keeps seguing into random historical recounts and back stories, some of them were really detailed for characters that don't appear again. These really long rambling bits didn't feel cohesive, and 85% in I am still wondering where this is going. Laroche is such an irritating fella, and I find myself being irritated by the author as well. Like come on get back to the topic of the Fakahatchee, plant theft and the court case, which I thought was the supposed central plot of the book? I have read better plant books... but maybe because those really good ones are by plant people while this one feels very much a spectator, which the author mentions many times:
- "It was religion. I wanted to want something as much as people wanted these plants"
- "I want to know what it feels like to care about something passionately."
- "To desire orchids is to have a desire that will never be, can never be, fully requited."
- "I was starting to believe that the reason it matters to care passionately about something is that it whittles the world down to a more manageable size. It makes the world seem not huge and empty but full of possibility."
- "Everything with him was extremes. The regular world was too modulated for him."
My fav quote from Martin Motes:

Instead of giving the feeling of passion and awe for the wonderful world of orchids and plants and all the personal reasons to collect orchids, the way it is written is like describing this weird world of niche interest with these weird nerdy kooky people. Not sure what to feel about this.”

Susan Orlean has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1992 and has also written for Outside, Esquire, Rolling Stone, and Vogue. She graduated from the University of Michigan and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. She now lives in Los Angeles and upstate New York with her husband and son.
