The One from the Other

By Philip Kerr
The One from the Other by Philip Kerr digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

In the fourth mystery in Philip Kerr's New York Times bestselling series, Bernie Gunther—a former policeman and reluctant SS offier—attempts to start over in the aftermath of World War 2 and quickly learns that the past is never far behind you...

Berlin, 1949
. Amid the chaos of defeat, Germany is a place of dirty deals, rampant greed, and fleeing Nazis. For Bernie Gunther, Berlin has become far too dangerous. After being forced to serve in the SS in the killing fields of Ukraine, Bernie has moved to Munich to reestablish himself as a private investigator.

Business is slow and his funds are dwindling when a woman hires him to investigate her husband's disappearance. No, she doesn't want him back—he's a war criminal. She merely wants confirmation that he is dead. It's a simple job, but in postwar Germany, nothing is simple—nothing is what it appears to be. Accepting the case, Bernie takes on far more than he'd bargained for, and before long, he is on the run, facing enemies from every side.

“Challenging, dark, emotional, funny, mysterious, reflective, sad, and tense. Medium-paced Plot- or character-driven? A mix Strong character development? Yes Loveable characters? Yes Diverse cast of characters? Yes Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes 4.75 ⭐ Wow. I was really dialed into this story. Just to let you know, these books are NOT easy reads...for obvious reasons. We are taling about Nazis and what they did to the Jews (and other "undesirables" in their view). The people that our protagonist has to "rub elbows" with are NOT good people. Also, Bernie Gunther (detective) is not always TOTALLY pure, either. He isn't a Nazi, but BECAUSE of his job (position), he's been put in situations that, though he doesn't like these people, he has to mix with them. Bernie Gunther walks a knife's edge in pretty much any story within the series...and now that the war is over...they are pointing blame on the REAL criminals that did these attrocities, but even some innocents are being caught/killed too. So, in this story, Bernie finds himself in ANOTHER precarious position...that he should've seen earlier, but he's ONLY human...and made some mistakes. Now, he has to fight for his life...and put the bad guys away. Love how does what he does. It isn't always pretty, but he IS pretty good at his job (plus, there is also LUCK involved). Love this series. It doesn't sugar coat the time period. It is a true Historical Fiction novel...where Bernie Gunther weaves through the facts and finds himself in the "history" books.  It is cool that the author also gives you factual points, at the end of the book, so that you know what really is known, and how he placed his protagonist in the story. I really enjoy that part of the book. If you haven't read one of these novels...I highly recommend them. I'm reading them in chronological order (with a few books that I've had to skip...since our library doesn't have all of them. I will come back to them, afterward). You can read them as published (not chronological), OR you can read them chronological. Obviously, for me, I wanted to follow the time...and see how Bernie Gunther grew as a person.”
