The Once Upon a Broken Heart Series Reviews

4.5
“This trilogy is the best one yet, What the helly, Stephanie Garber, you've made a really good impression on me as I read one of your first books. It is quite unfortunate that I didn't read Caraval at first and no one really told me (Maybe I got a few hints but no one specifically pressed on it) so I didn't really understand Jacks' backstory or the Fates at first. Unlike the Caraval trilogy which had a glossary at the end presented- that I came to know AFTER I read OUABH , this trilogy didn't consist of it so yeah the first few chapters were a bit of a struggle. I had to reread OUABH again after reading Caraval just to get more info on Donatellla ,Jacks and the Fates. Okay, let's dive in to our dear Evangeline, she's not the softy, childish ,naive and inexperienced girl the others say she is. To me, she is well matured enough (lets not talk about Luc, yk what first love does to humans - into fools) and knows well of her surroundings if you get what pov I'm coming from. She's fragile, stubborn but stands on her ground, though she may not be a skilled fighter, she is a good listener and a great FMC. I really liked all the small details and oh - Jacks. I never found Jacks cruel or anything (maybe a bit, a tiny tiney bit harsh) even when he put a spell on Tella or shot a little fox with the letter on it too (he didn't have his heart, it's reasonable). Maybe I'm hypnotized or just merely obsessed with this man. Tbh, if we compare her to Jacks, he had faced hell, a lot more pain and experienced a great deal of curses and events compared to Eva and that just makes me obsessed with him more, God if I could just close my eyes and be teleported to that world. The apples oh the apples, I didn't get why the apples are for until I started to finish ACFTL as my first reading and the way I melted when I reread OUABH, those moment especially those heated ones where he's biting into an apple, God. And that ocean scene - pure perfection. But what LaLa did was a bit cruel, like girl you got no friends, you can't fall in love, at least make a real friend , why you cursing a genuine friend who has done nothing wrong to you, Eva is new to this magical world and knows less than you, give her a leg. But I still love Lala tho, she reflects my character alot and I just like her a little more then, plus I CANT WAIT FOR LALA AND CASTOR'S LOVE STORY. I really hated Apollo at the end, he was shit and made Eva feel shit and did absolute shit. Oh and I will never forgive Aurora for putting my Jacks into so much misery and pain by her petty feelings, curses and her bratty attitude, Damn her. I would've loved to see more of Eva and Jacks, probably by Stephanie releasing a longer Novella than for the Caraval's Spectacular. This trilogy is surely one of my top trilogy reads of the year and a 5 star for sure. I love Stephanie, her imagination, her writing skills and thanking God and placing her faith first in her Acknowledgements - it just makes me happy. And thank you EvaJacks, Magnificent North , Meridian Empire and most of all, Stephanie Garber for making my summer 2025 truly memorable.”
“This series and Throne of Glass will forever fight for top favorite series for me, but these are the most ethereal, whimsical, heartbreaking and equally heartwarming books I’ve ever read. Stephanie Garber has an unparalleled knack for creating whimsical—but twisted—worlds and characters and, even more beautifully, strong female characters that never sacrifice an ounce of femininity or gentleness or graciousness. The characters—Evangeline especially—that Stephanie writes are the types of people we need more of in real life. I love this series with my whole heart. I love the romance, the writing style, every character, the world building, the CLOTHING descriptions, the plot structure, ALL OF IT!!”
