The Nesting

By C. J. Cooke
The Nesting by C. J. Cooke digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The woods are creeping in on a nanny and two young girls in this chilling modern Gothic thriller.

Architect Tom Faraday is determined to finish the high-concept, environmentally friendly home he’s building in Norway—in the same place where he lost his wife, Aurelia, to suicide. It was their dream house, and he wants to honor her with it.

Lexi Ellis takes a job as his nanny and immediately falls in love with his two young daughters, especially Gaia. But something feels off in the isolated house nestled in the forest along the fjord. Lexi sees mysterious muddy footprints inside the home. Aurelia’s diary appears in Lexi’s room one day. And Gaia keeps telling her about seeing the terrifying Sad Lady. . . .

Soon Lexi suspects that Aurelia didn’t kill herself and that they are all in danger from something far more sinister lurking around them.

“This is one of those books that you buy, put on your shelves and forget about. For me at least. So this year, I decided that I was going to put all my unread books (or the titles) into a jar and draw from them when I had an opportunity for a leisure read! This was the first one chosen for 2024! Plot: The plot of this story is really good. There are a few trigger warnings (suicide, self-harm), that I ignored when looking at/for trigger warnings. There are multiple settings in which the book takes place, and the description used in the writing truly allows you to visualize where the books are taking place. The thrill of this novel was very Verity to me, which I enjoyed. I also adored how the author used Norwegian mythology and stories throughout the book. Characters: I adored the characters throughout. They were all unique in their respects, and you couldn't help but love most of them. They were well-developed, and I asked why everything felt too good to be true throughout. Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was well-written, a quick read, and somewhat scares me. This is one of those books I will recommend to one of my friends who enjoys thrillers/horror novels, and I will probably be checking out other books by C.J. Cooke after I finish my book-buying ban... Stars: 4/5 Time spent reading: 4 Hours, 46 Minutes”
