The Murder of Mr. Wickham
ByPublisher Description
A summer house party turns into a thrilling whodunit when Jane Austen's Mr. Wickham—one of literature’s most notorious villains—meets a sudden and suspicious end in this brilliantly imagined mystery from a New York Times bestselling author featuring Austen’s leading literary characters.
“Had Jane Austen sat down to write a country house murder mystery, this is exactly the book she would have written.” —Alexander McCall Smith
The happily married Mr. Knightley and Emma are throwing a party at their country estate, bringing together distant relatives and new acquaintances—characters beloved by Jane Austen fans. Definitely not invited is Mr. Wickham, whose latest financial scheme has netted him an even broader array of enemies. As tempers flare and secrets are revealed, it’s clear that everyone would be happier if Mr. Wickham got his comeuppance. Yet they’re all shocked when Wickham turns up murdered—except, of course, for the killer hidden in their midst.
Nearly everyone at the house party is a suspect, so it falls to the party’s two youngest guests to solve the mystery: Juliet Tilney, the smart and resourceful daughter of Catherine and Henry, eager for adventure beyond Northanger Abbey; and Jonathan Darcy, the Darcys’ eldest son, whose adherence to propriety makes his father seem almost relaxed. In this tantalizing fusion of Austen and Christie, from New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray, the unlikely pair must put aside their own poor first impressions and uncover the guilty party—before an innocent person is sentenced to hang.

“I don't necessarily think this was a bad book, but it has lots of characters and it alternates between using first and last names which makes it hard to follow. It was very slow paced as well. I'm hoping the second book which is the one that caught my attention is better, but I'll be taking a break before I read it.”
“What can I say that hasn’t already been said in the 2k reviews. Mr. Wickham Sucks!
This was a lovely new way to experience Austin’s characters after the close of their stories. Making Mr Wickham the central villain in a majority of Austin’s characters lives was both genius and believable. While the pacing of the story is intentionally slow, I personally enjoyed the opportunity to slow down. The pacing gives the author the opportunity to touch of closed door discussions and conflicts between all of the couples stuck at the worst house party ever. This was particularly delightful for me as a certified gossip and who doesn’t want to listen in on behind the scenes goings on between all these beloved characters.
Jonathan Darcy (yes he’s their son) is the most wholesome and delightful semi adult ever. I’d love to see more of him and Juliette investigating together soon 🫶”
“What a fun romp through the Jane Austen universe! I enjoyed revisiting beloved characters and reveling in the demise of a deplorable one. Thoroughly enjoyed the way Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy mirrored their parents in their respective Austen novels but still held the reigns of their own coming-of-age stories.”
