Charley is an athlete. He wants to grow up to be the fastest runner in the world, like his father. He wants to be painted crossing the finishing line, in his racing silks, with a medal around his neck. Charley lives in a stable. He isn't a runner, he's a mount. He belongs to a Hoot: The Hoots are alien invaders. Charley hasn't seen his mother for years, and his father is hiding out in the mountains somewhere, with the other Free Humans. The Hoots own the world, but the humans want it back. Charley knows how to be a good mount, but now he's going to have to learn how to be a human being.

“One of the weirdest books I’ve read- makes sense being a PKD winner in 2002. While this book is a superficial, often immature story told through eyes of a child- i felt this book hold lots of allegory and nuanced deeper themes. And is guarenteed to bring up interesting discussion… We follow charley, a young boy who grew up knowing the Hoots (alien creatures) are now the masters of humanity on Earth, and that we humans were meant to be their prized mounts- they do after all take care of us. Charley’s dreams and world view change when he gets “rescued” by a team of wild humans. Unlike other tropes, he isnt grateful and wants to go back home.”
“The second novel that I had to read for my English class. If I could describe it in one word it would be weird. Alien invaders riding humans because they cannot walk around and the main character loves it? Just, very unexpected. I did get a warning from a friend that chapter one is from the perspective of Charley's (main character) father and then the rest of the novel was from Charley's perspective. Also, the ending was just a jump and left me with a lot of confused thoughts. Not something I would pick up but a very interesting read.”
