“THE MORTONS – by Justine Larbalestier and Scott Westerfeld
“Everyone seems so cheerful,” Faraday said. “Happy to be together, even if it’s a funeral.” I knew what she was sensing: the collective animal that forms whenever my family assembles. Bonds of tradition, forged of spilled blood and stopped hearts. The loyalty that remained after the death of care.
“I knew you’d feel it,” Sebastian said to Faraday. “We don’t invite just anyone. You belong with us.”
The book started really well—a darkness within a mystery about family and tradition—a narrative laden with intense moments sprinkled with mundane ones, which dilute the tension and leave this reader nonplussed.
I found myself losing interest by the sixty percent mark, thus resulting in a DNF.
What pulled my eye to read this book is the cover, which is *chef’s kiss* perfection!
I look forward to reading what this duo—or each author—comes up with next!
