The Missing Pages
ByPublisher Description
A ghost in a library. A story waiting to be told. The Missing Pages is a rich, lyrical novel that reminds us that books are as eternal as the soul.
1912: Harry Widener, a promising and passionate book collector, boards the Titanic holding tight to a priceless volume he’s just purchased in London. After catastrophe strikes the ship, Harry’s last known words are that he must return to his cabin to retrieve his latest treasure. Neither the young man nor the book are ever seen again. Honoring her son’s memory, Harry’s mother builds the Harry Widener Memorial Library at Harvard to house his extensive book collection and ensure his legacy.
Decades later, Violet Hutchins, a Harvard sophomore recovering from her own great loss, is working as a page at the Widener Library. When mysterious things begin happening at the library, Violet wonders if Harry Widener’s ghost is trying to communicate with her, seeking Violet to uncover a long-buried secret that the ardent young Harry took with him to the grave.
For fans of The Midnight Library and The Book Thief, bestselling author Alyson Richman has written a love story, a ghost story, and an elegy to the healing power of books.

“This was not a good book. The big reveal was very obvious from the beginning and the other mystery was resolved in an unsatisfying way. The characters were flat and boring. I just don’t know who the audience for this book is. It’s not well-written, there were weird historical inaccuracies, and I won’t pick up another book from this author.”

“Thank you NetGalley, Union Square & Co, and Alyson Richman for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve always been a collector of Titanic stories, so The Missing Pages by Alyson Richman immediately caught my attention when I was looking for new books to request on NetGalley. I was fascinated to discover that it’s based on the real-life story of Henry Elkins Widener and the Widener family, whose lives were forever altered by that fateful voyage. Richman is a wonderful storyteller; her prose is graceful and evocative, and she weaves historical fact and fiction together in a way that feels both emotional and immersive. The attention to period detail and the way she captures grief, love, and legacy are truly fantastic.
This could have easily been a 5-star read for me because it was so well written and beautifully researched, but I found myself far more drawn to Harry and Ada’s storyline than to Violet’s. Henry and Ada’s chapters had so much emotional weight and felt grounded in real history and heartbreak, while many of Violet’s scenes came across as a little too polished or, at times, extremely corny. I kept waiting for a deeper connection to form between her and Theo as well (there were hints of something that never quite materialized), and that definitely left me wanting more.
Still, even with that missing spark, The Missing Pages is a moving and elegantly told story that I am very glad I read.”
