The Miles Between

By Mary E. Pearson
The Miles Between by Mary E. Pearson digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Destiny Faraday makes a point of keeping her distance from her classmates at Hedgebrook Academy. Her number-one rule: Don't get attached. But one day, unexpectedly finding a car at their disposal, Destiny and three of her classmates embark on an unauthorized road trip.

They're searching for one fair day—a day where the good guy wins and everything adds up to something just and right. Their destination: Langdon, a town that Destiny's unsuspecting companions hope will hold simply a day of fun. But, as Destiny says, "Things are not always what they seem." Only she knows that Langdon holds far more than that—a deep secret she has never shared with anyone.

The Miles Between explores the wonder and magic of a very real world where chance, mystery, and secrets abound.

“Middle school staple for me. A fun, cozy, everything-is-right-in-the-world adventure with a touch of magic. Then it SUCKER punches you with emotion and angst.”
“nope! bad!”
“This wasn't that great. I don't think that a "fair day" involving good coincidences to show up, dusted over with some traumatic backstory was a good story at all. I get why Destiny wanted a "fair day," with her whole family basically dying in front of her eyes, but for the author to give that to her was kind of cheesy. In this case, it would have been a fair day if the author just gave her her family back, alive and even healthier than before. Life is unfair. It's gritty. It's beautiful. Heartbreaking and full of laughter. No one has these types of fair days, and it felt more like a hallucination or a dream more than anything. It felt like a kid whining in a candy shop for a chocolate bar, and instead of being told to hush, the owner of the store just gives the kid his keys to his business and all the candy he wants, plus more. I don't even remember most of what happened in this book. Destiny and a few other teenagers hijack a car and then travel to random places where good coincidences start to occur. One of them including a scene where one teenager pees next to the president. And if that doesn't sound hallucinatory, I don't know what does. Overall, I listened to the audiobook and I don't know if doing that made this book worse for me, but the narrator was just annoying and hard to listen to. Not to mention, I daydream and drift off a lot with audiobooks, so the whole experience was just not great. Not bad, but not amazing either.”
