The Mermaid

By Christina Henry
The Mermaid by Christina Henry digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

From the author of Lost Boy comes a beautiful historical fairy tale about a mermaid who leaves the sea, only to become the star attraction of history's greatest showman.

Once there was a mermaid called Amelia who could never be content in the sea, a mermaid who longed to know all the world and all its wonders, and so she came to live on land.

Once there was a man called P. T. Barnum, a man who longed to make his fortune by selling the wondrous and miraculous, and there is nothing more miraculous than a real mermaid.

Amelia agrees to play the mermaid for Barnum and walk among men in their world, believing she can leave anytime she likes. But Barnum has never given up a money-making scheme in his life, and he's determined to hold on to his mermaid.

“I liked her other books more. It didn’t really excite me and it felt like a chore to read but that’s okay because it’s just not my cup of tea”
Expressionless Face““Do not mistake the revelation of my body for the revelation of my heart. My heart keeps its own secrets, and they don't belong to you or anyone else just because you've seen me with a fish tail.” Happy new year!! Kicking it off with mermaids because i love mermaids. Unfortunately, this book was another mermaid let down for me but a little better than others i’ve read. We follow amelia, who is a mermaid/widow living off the north coast. She gets recognized by some dude named barnum who is loosely based on a real person who conned people basically. Anyway yeah, this dude wants to profit off of amelia and for some reason shes ok with it? I still feel like character intentions were kinda unclear. There was also this weird mix of religion that didn’t always feel like it fit. The plot was wild, and really random at times, and i still got bored. Started off great tho!”
