“Watney & Martinez’s relationship is very cute. Read PHM before this and I preferred that one over this. Since Watney was stuck on Mars by himself, more of the plot was just sciency mumbo jumbo and him showing off how smart or resourceful he was. The cuts to people on Earth and in the Hermes saved the book and injected the humanity into an otherwise very jargony book. The premise was nice - showing that people can come together to help someone in need, but it kind of got undercut by (again) the science/pseudoscience. Watney felt a little bit more juvenile than Grace did, and I couldn’t help but compare the two and enjoyed Grace’s character more. Otherwise the humor ranged from fine to deserving of a few snorts. Even though Watney was the main voice, Martinez carried.”
