The Marriage Act
By John MarrsPublisher Description
What if marriage was the law? Dare you disobey? Black Mirror meets thriller with a dash of Naomi Alderman’s The Power in this dark, high-concept novel by the bestselling author of The One.
Britain. The near-future. A right-wing government believes it has the answer to society’s ills—the Sanctity of Marriage Act, which actively encourages marriage as the norm, punishing those who choose to remain single.
But four couples are about to discover just how impossible relationships can be when the government is monitoring every aspect of our personal lives—monitoring every word, every minor disagreement…and will use every tool in its arsenal to ensure everyone will love, honor and obey.

“Jeffrey is a psychopath, and I wanted to drill a hole in his head! Ugh! I can’t remember the last time I felt so much hate and disdain for a fictional character!
As always, John Marrs never fails to amaze me with his extraordinary imagination. The Marriage Act is a dark concept. It felt like watching an episode of Black Mirror, where the government implements a law on marriage—Smart Marriage. Everything is recorded and monitored through an advanced system. If the government decides that your marriage is in trouble, then it’s not just your marriage that’s at risk—your social standing, financial stability, everything will be picked apart.
It seems like being single is the worst crime.
Imaginative and scary. There’s never a dull plot or unoriginal concept when it comes to John Marrs. The characters and events were interconnected and there's a right amount of twists. I loved it.”
