The Man Made of Smoke by Alex North digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

"So well written and neatly plotted that it will appeal even to readers who usually shy away from this sort of thing." ―New York Times

The latest gripping serial killer thriller from the New York Times bestselling author Alex North.

Dan Garvie’s life has been haunted by the crime he witnessed as a child—narrowly escaping an encounter with a notorious serial killer. He has dedicated his life since to becoming a criminal profiler, eager to seek justice for innocent victims. So when his father passes away under suspicious circumstances, Dan revisits his small island community, determined to uncover the truth about his death. Is it possible that the monster he remembers from his childhood nightmares has returned after all these years?

With his signature shock and suspense, Alex North brings us The Man Made of Smoke. In turn emotional, introspective, and utterly terrifying, this is a story of fathers and sons, shadows and secrets, and the fight we all face to escape the trauma of the past.

The Man Made of Smoke Reviews

3.5
“Took me entirely too long to finish. Maybe I wasn’t in the right headspace for a thriller. Too many characters, and I hated the way this was written. I wish there would have been more labels when the character we were following changed. I just felt like I couldn’t follow the story like I needed to in order to really enjoy this.”
Red Angry Face“If the “twist” is just pulling a random villain pulled out of the woodworks it’s not a twist it’s just bad writing In my opinion. This book has a okay-ish twist that when they vaguely allude to it, it’s cool for a second because it feels like its making you think. Then, like a dora the explorer episode, this twist becomes explicitly spelled out by the main characters at which point if its true the rest of the book would be boring. So then the reader creates a lot of more backstory for why this supposed killer did it and then threw it all out the window when some random person they talked about once becomes the killer. There were absolutely no indications that he was the killer in anyway before the reveal. Nothing to think back on “oh that makes sense now” moments. Just a writing intentionally leading you in the wrong direction intentionally and then rug pulling. I see a lot of reviews saying it was confusing, I don’t necessarily agree but the hard copy I read did have titles of chapters with names of the lesser obvious narrators. All in all, if you think criminal minds episodes aren’t long enough to satisfy you (except the profiling is completely wrong), this is the book for you.”
