The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Named one of Time’s 100 Best Mystery and Thriller Books of All Time, The Maltese Falcon is an intense and immersive hard-boiled detective novel that inspired multiple adaptations—including the popular film noir classic starring Humphrey Bogart.

This stunning new collector’s hardcover edition includes brand-new black-and-white illustrations, a foil printed cover, and gorgeous sprayed edges.

Brilliant detective Sam Spade is the quintessential private eye, with his own code of ethics. When a standard stakeout goes wrong and Spade’s partner is killed, he finds himself drawn into the hunt for a fantastic treasure of dubious origin—a golden bird encrusted with jewels.

But he’s not the only one on the trail of the falcon. Hot on his heels are Joel Cairo, a perfumed grifter; an oversized adventurer named Gutman; and Spade’s new client Brigid O’Shaughnessy, a beautiful but treacherous woman whose loyalties shift at the drop of a hat.

A classic that redefined the genre, The Maltese Falcon is a must-read for mystery fans.

The Maltese Falcon Reviews

“I wanted to love this. I really did. The Maltese Falcon is the detective novel. The blueprint. The origin story of every brooding man in a trench coat who solves crimes while emotionally unavailable. I was bored. Sam Spade moves through a case full of lies, murder, and a very dramatic hunt for a jeweled falcon that everyone is salivating over. People show up, say suspicious things, disappear, come back with new lies, and no one ever just tells the truth. I should feel tense and suspicious. Instead, I felt like I was eavesdropping on conversations I was not fully invited into. The writing style is the reason. You get zero access to anyone’s inner world. No thoughts or emotional cues. Just dialogue and action. I understand that this is intentional. I respect what Hammett was doing here. I need to feel something. Give me one crumb of emotional connection. Anything. I was out here trying to care and the book said no. Then, we have the audiobook. I cannot ignore it. I will not ignore it. The narration took me all the way out. The accents were wild. Not in a fun way. I had to pause more than once because I started laughing at the female voices. It felt like a performance that did not match the tone of the book at all. Which made an already distant story even harder to stay engaged with. Here is the thing. I see the importance of this book. I see how it shaped the genre. Sam Spade walked so every morally gray detective could run. That matters. It really does. Appreciation and enjoyment are not the same. This will probably work for you if you love classic noir, sharp dialogue, and a story that refuses to hold your hand. If you are like me and need even a hint of emotional depth or character insight, you might find yourself checking out long before the mystery wraps up.”
