The Majesties
By Tiffany TsaoPublisher Description
In this “bold and dramatic portrayal of characters on the cusp of an impossible choice” (Publishers Weekly), two sisters from a wealthy Chinese-Indonesian family grapple with secrets and betrayal after one of them poisons their entire family.
Gwendolyn and Estella have always been as close as sisters can be. Growing up in a wealthy, eminent, and sometimes deceitful family, they’ve relied on each other for support and confidence. But now Gwendolyn is lying in a coma, the sole survivor of Estella’s poisoning of their whole clan.
As Gwendolyn struggles to regain consciousness, she desperately retraces her memories, trying to uncover the moment that led to this shocking act. Was it their aunt’s mysterious death at sea? Estella’s unhappy marriage to a dangerously brutish man? Or were the shifting loyalties and unspoken resentments at the heart of their opulent world too much to bear? Can Gwendolyn, at last, confront the carefully buried mysteries in their family’s past and the truth about who she and her sister really are?
Traveling from the luxurious world of the rich and powerful in Indonesia to the most spectacular shows at Paris Fashion Week, from the sunny coasts of California to the melting pot of Melbourne’s university scene, The Majesties “is a thrilling, tender page-turner” (Krys Lee, author of Drifting House) as well as “a sobering look at the dark side of extreme wealth” (Kirkus Reviews).

“The background of the story is the one that I can relate since this story takes time and places in Indonesia, so I can relate more to this story despite that I’m not included in their rich circle of course but little bit I can imagine. For me, relate that the author still have a background of Indonesia, the book often uses a hard vocabulary so maybe for some people it’s not too easy to read. It tell us an shocking event about this one conglomerate family that looks like fine on the outside, and we as a reader will be told about the family harsh truth. It’s a intense yet still a good book for read especially if you’re Indonesian.”

“I can understand why the reviews on this one are mixed - it’s tagged a thriller and has the plot twists of a thriller, but doesn’t read like a thriller. The story and characters kept me hooked, though. I read almost the entire book flying from Texas to North Carolina, which I always feel is a testament to compelling narrative.”

““We’re sick, Doll. Gravely ill.”
This book talks about rich Chinese-Indonesia family, their privilege and what they need to do to get to their position now. It is very dense since it also covers so many horrible acts of politics in Indonesia. it has family drama, love, and sisterhood combined.
At first, I find a little bit difficult to catch up with the pace and plot line, but as the story goes I became more intrigued with the story that was being told and wanted to know more.
The main learning aspect that I got from this book is to have empathy despite the privilege that I have.”
