I liked the overall plot with the suspense, mystery, action, and the treasure map, but the romance just didn’t do it for me. I felt like the romance was more focused on the physical side instead of the emotional side. Yes, he was trying to protect her, and he began to care for her, but I didn’t feel like it. Was this ever ending. Love story. There needed to be a lot more there before I could’ve bought it. But I love that they were both on two different missions that collide and bring them into contact with one another. I liked seeing how they navigated this dangerous situation and did so together.”

“It’s safe to say that Nicole Locke took me on quite a journey with Bied and Louve. Bied loves her family and because of this she is determined to save her sister. Biding her time as a servant until she can put a plan in place. Things seem even more complicated when Louve arrives but she soon realises that maybe he can help after all. Louve is a brilliant character, a mercenary on a mission but so much more than that too. Even though he is stuck right in the middle of a dangerous and manipulative family he is determined to complete his mission. Both of these characters had strong personalities which made them the perfect match! Their interactions were lively especially that very first meeting. It definitely brought a smile to my face and from that moment their chemistry just builds making everything so much more interesting to see play out.
The Maiden and the Mercenary moves at a lovely pace and easily kept me invested throughout. The risky and dangerous mission that Louve has committed to was great at keeping me on my toes. The Warstone family really helped to bring an extra menace to the story as you never can quite tell what they will do next! I do have to mention that this book is part of the Lovers and Legends series and while I do think it works as a standalone. To get a better understanding of the power play and overall manipulations within the Warstone family it might be beneficial to read some of the previous books. Plus it really is a great series!
