“Might be my least favorite Daphne du Maurier read so far.”
“honestly wouldn’t recommend reading this book unless you’re a du maurier fan + interested in seeing how her writing developed. superrrr slow start. the relationship between janet (mother) and joseph (son) was incestual and odd. the book felt like: growing up, marrying, having children, being obsessed with the sea, repeat with a different character in a different context. the concept of the book is cool but i didn’t like the execution. i liked the way the book wrapped up with the second half of janet’s part, and i enjoyed du mauriers atmospheric writing. other than that, i didn’t feel connected to many of the characters, and i was bored for 50% of this book.”
