Shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, John W. Campbell Award, British Fantasy Awards and the Brave New Words Award.
A gripping and strange story of shedding skins, love and moving on from the award-winning author of The Beauty. Includes an exclusive short story set in the world of The Loosening Skin.

Rose Allington is a bodyguard for celebrities, and she suffers from a rare disease. Her moults come quickly, changing everything about her life, who she is, who she loves, who she trusts.

In a world where people shed their skin, it's a fact of life that we move on and cast off the attachments of our old life. But those memories of love can be touched - and bought - if you know the right people.

Rose's former client, superstar actor Max Black, is hooked on Suscutin, a new wonderdrug that prevents the moult. Max knows his skins are priceless, and moulting could cost him his career.

When one of his skins is stolen, and the theft is an inside job, Max needs the best who ever worked for him - even if she's not the same person.

Includes an exclusive short story set in the world of The Loosening Skin.

Thinking Face“This book was not what I thought it would be, but in a good way. What I thought was gonna be a run of mill horror, was actually a thought provoking "black mirror" type story. Well worth the read.”
Slightly Smiling Face“This was a beautiful written book, but unfortunately, I couldn’t quite get into this one. I think it may be because I was suspecting different. To me this would fit better in the thriller category than in the horror. The way the story jumped around timelines made it a bit confusing to follow at times, which may also have affected my enjoyment of this book. I’m glad I own a paperback at this one because I will definitely be rereading this one in the future. I think going in with the proper access as what the book is about and the style of which is what really help me enjoy the story next time around.”
“3.5 stars This was a strange novel where humans shed their skin periodically throughout their lives. When they do, emotions like love also shed so that they can no longer love the person they're with or even continue in their current careers. In such a society, shed skins can take on a certain value and some will go to extremes to preserve and seek out love. This was definitely an interesting read. Even though I preferred Parts 1 and 2 of the book and I think it could have ended there, the last couple parts were still compelling enough. This is my second read by this author (The Beauty was excellent) and I look forward to reading more by her.”
