Six young sisters live in the depths of the ocean, longing for the chance to see the beauty of the earth. Most eager of all is the youngest mermaid, who counts the days to her 15th birthday when her grandmother will finally allow her to rise to the surface.

Her first sight above the water is a large ship on which a beautiful prince is celebrating his 16th birthday. Immediately she falls in love, and so begins her determined quest to join the prince on earth as a human.

Full of wonder and heart, The Little Mermaid remains one of the most powerful fairy tales ever written, and this gorgeously illustrated translation gives it renewed life.

The Little Mermaid Reviews

“Interesting to read the original and see how Disney changed the story.”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“The Little Mermaid 🧜‍♀️ by Hans Christian Anderson (Danish Author) The chance encounter of the real version of this famous fairy tale when I visited The Little mermaid statue in Copenhagen, Denmark 🇩🇰 has left me speechless. It’s not the ending the Disney has fed you in your childhood. So the story begins with a protagonist, a young, beautiful female 🧜‍♀️ with a longing for the outer/ human world. The desire to know more about them & their ways makes her come across this Prince she sees on ship with whom she has love at first sight. The incessant longing turns into mini stalking to the point that she saves him when his ship sinks in a storm ⛈️. The yearning takes a dangerous turn where she bargains her beautiful voice with the sea witch with a pair of legs 🦵! Every step she takes is like walking on knives and glass.😳 The only way to get her voice back would be if the prince fall in love with her and marries her. If so happens that he married someone else she will turn into foamy sea bubbles for rest of her immortal life ( 300 years) The dilemma to choose between the lifetime of muteness with severe excruciating pain over foam is what she has actually signed up for. The version I read doesn’t have things work out for her. It’s a 💔 love story. The young mermaid 🧜‍♀️ is willing to give up her entire life in sea , her identity in order for a mortal human soul’s approval and love. The final message is unclear, inconclusive & criticised over years for the scare it runs over children in the name of moral fairy tales. All said the story itself has beautiful passages describing the oceans 🌊, dancing flora and fishes 🐡 & beautiful poetic prose for the longing of approval of the one you desire . A solid 3/5 ✨ from my end.”
