The Little Friend

By Donna Tartt
The Little Friend by Donna Tartt digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Goldfinch comes an utterly riveting novel set in Mississippi of childhood, innocence, and evil. •  “Destined to become a special kind of classic.” —The New York Times Book Review

The setting is Alexandria, Mississippi, where one Mother’s Day a little boy named Robin Cleve Dufresnes was found hanging from a tree in his parents’ yard. Twelve years later Robin’s murder is still unsolved and his family remains devastated. So it is that Robin’s sister Harriet—unnervingly bright, insufferably determined, and unduly influenced by the fiction of Kipling and Robert Louis Stevenson--sets out to unmask his killer. Aided only by her worshipful friend Hely, Harriet crosses her town’s rigid lines of race and caste and burrows deep into her family’s history of loss. Filled with hairpin turns of plot and “a bustling, ridiculous humanity worthy of Dickens” (The New York Times Book Review), The Little Friend is a work of myriad enchantments by a writer of prodigious talent.

Thinking Face“This one took me a bit to finish but only because I read two other books while reading this one. I loved the story, although somewhat depressing and bleak, it was a beautifully written story. I loved the writing style of long sentences at times, describing things in great detail, which weren’t annoying here. Another Donna Tartt novel read and per usual one that will sit with me forever.”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“You've got to stick this one out, but it's not everybody's cup of tea. A painstakingly slow start to a rather surprising finish. I won't say there was a twist or any genious ending to the story, but there is a mastery that can be found in the descriptions of Donna Tartt's writing, where you find yourself slowly sinking into the world she builds and the characters that live and breathe within each page. You grow to understand them and the town they live in but it's a world that slowly unfurls for you and to some it may not be an exciting stay. Understandable. This was a great night read. I think my favorite parts of this book were just entering into the psyche of Harriet, a lonely, smart, little twelve-year old who has way more guts than I ever had when I was her age.”
