The Listener and Other Stories
ByPublisher Description
"Of the quality of Mr. Blackwood's genius there can be no dispute.... He is the one absolute and unquestioned master of weird atmosphere; and can evoke what amounts almost to a story from a simple fragment of humourless psychological description."
-H.P. Lovecraft
"This is perhaps a key differentiation that can be made between [Blackwood's] writing and that of his actual and approximate contemporaries: Lovecraft's sanity-shattering ontological paradigm shifts and Machen's drawing-back of the veil on the adumbral numinous are not entirely absent, but the focus is on the annihilation of the ego; the loss of personality; engulfment."

3.5
“It is the first Algernon Blackwood's story collection I have read, and it is definitely a decent one. I read stories in random order, but it appears that stories in the beginning of this anthology are better written compared with latter ones - there is simply more depth, thought and eeriness in the former.
My grading would be something like that:
☆☆☆☆☆ (excellent):
- The Listener
- The Willows
☆☆☆☆ (good):
- Max Hensing - Bacteriologist and Murderer
- The Dance of Death
☆☆☆ (ok):
- The Insanity of Jones
- The old man of visions
- May Day Eve
- Miss Slumbubble – and Claustrophobia
- The woman’s ghost story.”
