The Lies of Locke Lamora
ByPublisher Description
NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The first book of the epic fantasy caper Gentleman Bastard Sequence about a roguish group of conmen, which George R. R. Martin says “captured me right on the first page and never let me go.”
“If you haven’t read [The Lies of Locke Lamora], you should. If you have read it, you should probably read it again.”—Patrick Rothfuss
An orphan’s life is harsh—and often short—in the mysterious island city of Camorr. But young Locke Lamora dodges relentless danger, becoming a thief under the tutelage of a gifted con artist. As leader of the band of light-fingered brothers known as the Gentlemen Bastards, Locke is soon infamous, fooling even the underworld’s most feared ruler. But in the shadows lurks someone still more ambitious and deadly. Faced with a bloody coup that threatens to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the enemy at his own brutal game—or die trying.

“What hath The Lies of Locke Lamora wrought?! A story of hubris and heists and found family, I was teary eyed between my laughs!
First, this book is a rollercoaster of fun! We primarily follow our main protagonist, Locke Lamora, through his thievin’ ways alongside his (holy, literally) Gentleman Bastards comrades. Lamora is an amazing character. Witty and brilliant, but arrogant. He’s this wonderfully built character that is far from one dimensional. He’s a thief, a priest, a commander, and a brother. He’s a lover to a girl who he’s still crushing on, even if she’s off somewhere far, far away. How he interplays with all the side characters is done so well and feels just so real! The losses we encounter are heartbreaking, and truly reinforce the “Lies of Locke Lamora”.
The prose is beautifully written and atmospheric, building this beautiful web of canals, heists, and comical moments into this fun story of heists, hubris, and family. The story structure itself is so unique too! I haven’t really read anything quite like it. We have these mixes of interludes, subchapters, and flashbacks as we learn about Lamora, the greater world, and his friends.
The plot itself is fantastic. It felt reminiscent of Pirates of the Caribbean, the movie Heat, and the Godfather! A genre blending novel of fantasy, crime, action, comedy, and drama. It was so hard to put down once I started reading! I was routinely unable to see the twists and turns coming, leaving me completely blindsided on multiple occasions! The anxiety and intensity of the story does not let up for even a second.
The worldbuilding was beautiful and so atmospheric! Very obviously feels like a Venice or Italian style world but it’s done so well. The interplay of faith, the sea, the class and caste system, and the crime networks were beautiful and brilliant. I’m so glad I read this book! I’ll be ranting and raving for ages.”
